32nd United Nations World Tourism Organization Conference – Sri Lanka

Corona Virus Situation in Sri Lanka; Is It Suitable to hold UNWTO Conference?

Sri Lanka managed the “Covid” situation very well over the last two months. While countries like USA or UK are facing massive challenges to keep people alive, Sri Lanka has only around 800 corona virus patients. More than 250 patients are totally cured of their complications.

Most of there, none of the tourists in Sri Lanka was diagnosed with corona virus until now. There were many tourists who visited Sri Lanka just before the corona virus outbreak. But they are all safe and sound. The government is taking steps to safely take them back home. Honestly speaking, living in Sri Lanka amidst the outbreak of Corona virus is a blessing. Sri Lanka is quite a safe place to be compared to other countries in the world.

Sri Lanka will quit the lock down soon and open the country for tourists in the near future. This makes the country quite suitable to host the UN World Tourism Organization Conference in 2020 in the capital Colombo.

32nd United Nations World Tourism Organization Conference

Corona virus situation is getting better day by daily in Sri Lanka. Therefore, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has chosen Sri Lanka to host its UNWTO conference this year.

It is going to be the 32nd joint meeting of UNWTO’s commission for East Asia and Pacific and the UNWTO South Asia section. The conference will be held on 1st of July 2020 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority is currently working on organizing the conference.

The theme of the conference is:

Contemporary Challenges and Tourism Revitalization

The conference mainly focus on how to revitalize the highly affected tourism industry in times of crisis like this. Not only the tourism industry but there are many other industries combined with tourism industry which took a deadly hit during the corona virus outbreak. The conference also is going to focus on those areas as well.

Around 150 delegates from member states are going to participate in this event. Among the invitees, there are ministers, top government officials and representatives of member states.

Why Choose Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka bid to host this event in the 31st UNWTO conference held at Thimpu in Bhutan. They took this decision unanimously by all member states with the support of UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili. The reason behind choosing Sri Lanka is that at the time of 31st UNWTO conference, Sri Lanka was just recovering from the Easter Sunday Attacks which killed more than 300 people and also killed its tourism industry.

“We look forward to welcoming the top government delegates to Sri Lanka and showcase our products and services at this conference”

Sri Lanka Tourism Chair Person Kirmali Fernando

Hopefully the conference will help Sri Lanka to lift up the declined tourism industry due to easter attacks and corona virus. Sri Lanka is an amazing tourist destination. Very unique. It will be a shame if tourists do not get to visit Sri Lanka at least once in their lifetime.
